The Amish Genome

Since the early 1960s, when Victor McKusick began studying Amish genetics—leading to his classic “Mendelian Inheritance in Man” which prompted the Human Genome Project, researchers have found dozens of lethal mutations among the Amish due to the so called “founder effect.” Now, researchers at the University of Maryland have discovered mutations that benefit this population by protecting them from heart disease.
