Vagus Nerve Stimulator for Severe Respiratory Distress

Implanted vagus nerve stimulators have been in use for nearly a quarter of a century for treating drug-resistant depression and epilepsy. Apparently they meet the minimum level for FDA approval—40% of those treated have at least 50% improvement. Now a non-invasive VNS device has been FDA approved for treating airway insufficiency, as in COVID-19 sufferers who also have asthma. This piece doesn’t mention possible adverse effects, but it probably illustrates how little is known about the vagus nerve that runs from the brain stem to the abdomen on both sides of the neck. MORE
