You’ll recall children’s’ play tattoos—printed on a transfer film and stuck to skin. The grown-up version of this is transfer tattoos on foods to monitor their freshness or perhaps to deliver drugs. That’s the “work in progress” at the Italian Institute of Technology (Genoa), where engineers have to overcome some tricky problems, like edible batteries. This may be a distant dream, but Genoa was Christopher Columbus’ birthplace; so who knows what the future may be. MORE
