Regenerating Blood Vessels from Stem Cells

Peripheral Vascular Disease
Critical limb ischemia is an advanced stage of peripheral artery disease, which arises from atherosclerosis. In the worst case, the lifesaving solution is amputation of a lower extremity. Recently, however, Vascugen (Indianapolis) has licensed a stem cell therapeutic from Indiana University to grow new blood vessels for this condition. The strategy is to grow a rare endothelial stem cell and inject it directly into the ischemic region in order to stimulate new blood vessels. MORE
