Rapid Sequencing in the NICU

Lab techs at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego have done whole genome sequencing on neonates in as little as 19.5 hours. Though this piece doesn’t say what platform was used, Rady’s Institute for Genomic Medicine has partnered with nearby Illumina for several years. And, to date, Rady’s technicians have done rapid whole genome sequencing (rWGS) on 340 children, which showed a third of them had genetic disorders. This moves the bar a little closer for rWGS to become the standard for all neonate screening. MORE
