Since the US FDA first approved 3-D printed implants for clinical use in 2013, hundreds of procedures have been done. Oxford Performance Materials (South Windsor, CT) has seen 1,500 of its cranial implants used for skull fractures. As with injection molding, an image of the break guides the printer to make a custom fitting—i.e. “patient specific.” MORE
