A New Twist for Probiotics: Drug Delivery

This is a story about an idea that obviously is not ready for prime time, but is fascinating nonetheless. Systems biologists at the University of California-San Diego are engineering Salmonella not to deliver their toxins that cause gastrointestinal illness but instead to produce and deliver anticancer drugs to the GI tract. Most of the microbes die, but a small percent survive, repopulate, and continue this probiotic drug delivery. MORE
