Test Results for Lab-Grown Blood Vessels
June 28, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
Bioengineers at Duke and Yale universities have created blood vessels in tissue culture by allowing human vascular cells to grow over a scaffold until they acquired the right shape and the scaffold dissolves (taking about eight weeks). The vessels are then washed with detergents to remove any living cells and then they are ready for engraftment. For 60 dialysis patients, these “acellular” grafts proved more durable than synthetic grafts and just as safe. MORE
