LLNL to Develop DARPA’s Implantable Neural Device
September 9, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
One the one hand are 270,000 traumatic brain injuries in the American military since 2000, and on the other is the remarkable video of a paralyzed woman “thinking” the movement of a robotic arm so she could sip a mug of coffee with the aid of the “BrainGate” neural implant. The uphot is that neural implants are the hot new field in medical technology. This piece announces DARPA’s $2.5m grant to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, et al, “. . . . to develop a device that uses real-time recording and closed-loop stimulation of neural tissues to bridge gaps in the injured brain and restore individuals’ ability to form new memories and access previously formed ones.” MORE
