Continuing the Search for Artificial Blood

Attempts to create artificial blood have been on-going almost since Landsteiner discovered the human blood groups in the early 20th century. Most efforts have failed because hemoglobin can have toxic effects. Researchers at the University of Essex (UK) believe they have found a solution by attaching tyrosine residues to hemoglobin and thereby detoxifying it. MORE
