Cochlear Implants Enable Gene Therapy for Auditory Nerves

Electroporation is one method of gene transfer, but it is limited by the number of cells it can access and the amount of DNA that can be delivered. However, researchers at the University of New South Wales have used the electrodes of a cochlear implant to transfer genes for neurotropins that cause the auditory nerves to regenerate. This offers hearing improvement but is not seen as yet as an alternative to the implanted device. MORE
