Brain Stimulators for Military Use
Brain-implanted devices are gaining traction in part because so many soldiers in recent wars have sustained limb loss or PTSD, and in part due to the remarkable news story about the “BrainGate” implant which allowed a paralyzed woman to operate a robotic arm by her thoughts. Now, DARPA has let two contracts under its Systems-Based Neurotechology for Emerging Therapies Program to Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of California-San Francisco to develop implants to control emotions, which in their most serious forms contribute to suicide, addiction, depression, and personality disorders. With good reason, DARPA has created an ethics panel specifically for this technology, as the CIA’s “MK Ultra” program is still within living memory. MORE
