Implantable Drug Device to Restore Hearing

Several factors can account for the tiny hair-like cells in the inner ear collapsing, resulting in hearing loss. Drugs are in development that may ameliorate this, but delivering them to the right place, at the right time, in the right dosage has been a constraint, though the Draper Laboratories (Cambridge, MA) may have found a solution in a small pump that is worn behind the ear (like a hearing aid) with a thin tube that feeds into the cochlea. This kind of automated drug delivery promises to reduce the number of visits a patient would have to make for treatment. MORE
