Methylome Biomarkers for Schizophrenia

Not all genetic diseases arise from mutations. Some result from DNA methylation—i.e. post translational modification. With schizophrenia, oxygen deprivation, immune system responses and neural cell differentiation can trigger pathogenic changes. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University Pharmacy School’s Center for Biomarker Research and Personalized Medicine (Richmond, VA) have identified 139 highly significant methylation events that comprise the now known methylome of this devastating mental disease.
