Automating Image Retrieval

In 1986, the US National Library of Medicine introduced its Unified Medical Language System, which was a comprehensive thesaurus and ontology of biomedical terms and concepts. Like the Oxford English Dictionary, the UMLS constantly grows and has become a standard reference tool, and with that as a model, bioinformaticists at Case Western Reserve University have built a data base of images that functions like the UMLS. One of its aims is to assist in patient education and self care through automatic image retrieval. MORE
