IBM’s “Watson” on Duty at Sloane-Kettering

There is no substitute in medicine for the astute physician, assuming he or she is mentally and physically alert. But for doctors who could use a help machine in diagnostics, IBM’s “Watson” has certain beyond-human features—like being able to read sixty million pages of natural language text is a second, and analyze symptoms almost as fast. Presently, Watson is being tutored in medical learning at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center in New York, while clinicians are learning how to present questions for Watson’s responses.
