“Pacemaker” for Chronic Back Pain

Earlier this year, the FDA approved a new spinal cord stimulator from Boston Scientific (Natick, MA) to neuromodulate chronic pain. In simple terms, this is an implantable computer, acting like a heart pacemaker but aimed at blocking pain impulses from the spinal cord to the brain. The device has 32 contact points with the spinal cord and a software program that automatically adjusts to the level of discomfort. MORE
