Qualcomm’s $10m “Tricorder” X-Prize competition now has 267 registered teams, with the next round coming in September. In this piece X Prize Foundations, Mark Winter, gives an overview of trends so far, and points out the abundance of biomarkers and sensing devices, while standardization seems to be the trailing edge. This seems comparable to railroad building in the early 19th century, when lots of companies built all kinds of equipment without reaching agreement of a standard gage for distance between the rails.
