Designing a Smart Phone with an e-Nose
June 26, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
During the 1970’s, Linus Pauling at Cal Tech did pioneering work in breath analysis, and now Cal Tech chemists aim to take that field of inquiry to a new level by designing an electronic nose for a smart phone. The idea is similar to the discovery and reference “fingerprints” of blood biomarkers, but in this case sensors detect chemical vapors that indicate disease states. This piece has both a video about the technology, and an embedded link to the history of breath analysis for medical diagnosis.
