Physicians treating hypertension often recommend that the patient buy a blood pressure meter, record its readings daily, and bring their notes back to the doctor. Many patients follow this advice. . . for a short time. This piece argues that figuring out the psychology involved in using medical devices is the key to successful use—maybe more so than the technology itself. A point can also be made (though not in this piece) that passive technology, where patients don’t even have to be aware of a monitoring device might be a better solution. MORE
