Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine

Since 1929, the Jackson Laboratory on Mt. Desert Island, ME has been breeding strains of mice—now more than 2,500 of them—for research into how genes work. That effort has now reached a new milestone, as the Laboratory and the State of Connecticut have signed an agreement to build a $1.1b “Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine” on the grounds of the University of Connecticut’s Health Center in Farmington. The 250,000 sq ft facility will take 20 years to complete, but ultimately will provide jobs for 600 scientists and technicians, as the tiny mouse remains the model for understanding mammalian genetics and molecular medicine.
