Everyone knows that a good diet and exercise promotes health and wellness, but the biochemistry involved remains vague. Researchers at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, however, have found what this piece calls “the missing link.” Exercise results in a protein, “irisin,” that decreases white fat in the body while increasing brown fat. The difference is that brown fat is metabolically active (i.e. it uses calories). While more brown fat does not imply weight loss, it has several health benefits including diabetes prevention. MORE
