Ultrasound Activated Pacemaker
January 24, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
Startup company, EBR Systems (Sunnyvale, CA) is developing a new generation of pacemakers that rely on ultrasound signaling rather than wired connections. The device still requires that a conventionally sized pacemaker be implanted in the chest, but it sends an ultrasound signal wirelessly to a tiny receiver within the heart that converts the ultrasound to an electrical impulse. The tandem parts are more easily put in or taken out than conventional devices, and don’t involve problems associated with wires. MORE
