Innovations in Wireless and Mobile Health Technologies: In Search of the Tricorder
Innovative wireless health information technologies are enabling health products and services unlike ever before. More and more wireless solutions are becoming a key component in the delivery of health services and the provision of care. Medical devices, health sensors and their applications are increasingly relying on wireless broadband functionality and interoperability to transmit raw data, diagnostic health information, critical aspects of care, emergency services and personalized health information. These services are at the forefront of a global revolution of how information is captured and disseminated; a revolution that collapses time and space and distance to monitor patients, develop meaningful analytical trends and save lives while maximizing efficiency, resources and funding. These advances in healthcare are paving the way for innovative tools that have begun to empower patients, changing the traditional practice of medicine.
Enter the X PRIZE Foundation’s, Tricorder X PRIZE. In collaboration with Qualcomm Incorporated, the X PRIZE Foundation is developing a competition to enhance integrated digital health. Tricorder X PRIZE will award the team that develops a mobile solution that can inexpensively diagnose patients, provide a recommended course of treatment and upload the relevant health data into the cloud, by utilizing combined expert systems and medical point-of-care data such as “lab-on-a-chip” or wireless sensors. The prize aims to empower people by extending the reach of health information and services utilizing the most widespread technology in the history of mankind: the mobile platform. Today and in the future, more can be done in medicine by combining advancements in expert systems, utilizing health data and relying on wireless mobile broadband technologies.
Robert Jarrin, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Qualcomm Incorporated will discuss the importance of wireless health, mobile technologies, regulatory frameworks and the design of the X PRIZE Foundation’s Tricorder X PRIZE.
