A “Virtual” Lab Rat
October 11, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
Like humans, rats can present hypertension, and the causes are highly complex in both species. To begin untangling the molecular, physiological and environmental mysteries of blood pressure, computational biologist Daniel Beard at the Medical College of Wisconsin, is designing a virtual physiological rat that takes a systems biology approach to understanding how genes and environment interact to produce illness. Once the virtual model exists, Beard will test its predictive power against live rats with known genetic conditions. MORE
