Stem cell “Bandage” for Torn Meniscal Cartilage
August 30, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
In most cases of a torn knee cartilage, surgeons remove the meniscus, even thought that can result in early onset arthritis. In the UK, however, regulators have approved a stem cell “bandage,” made from the patient’s own cells and grown in tissue culture, to repair the damage. Produced by Azellon Ltd, a University of Bristol spin-out company the clinical trials of this new application for stem cells are proceeding, starting with ten patients who will be followed for five years.
