Those who attended the 2005 Medical Automation Conference will remember Dean Kamen talking about the home dialysis machine he invented. Five years later, now, the FDA has approved an investigational device exemption for Baxter International and DEKA Research & Development Corporation (Kamen’s company) to begin clinical trials in mid-2011 for home-based dialysis. Implementation and sales will take another 4 years.
