Grid Computing for Alzheimer’s
October 26, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Grid computing-whereby multiple administrative computing domains loosely connect to gather and analyze data-has been around since the 1990’s. The You Tube clip in this piece describes how a European university consortium has created a virtual super computer (through their Internet connections) to scan 3-D MRI images that can show change in an Alzheimer’s patient’s brain. The consortium is called NEUGRID and by the end of this year it will complete its Alzheimer’s project and will move on to other neurodegenerative diseases. This raises at least a dream of physicians practicing in a community hospital collaborating similarly in subclassifying human diseases when molecular biomarkers are unavailable. MORE
