A century ago, electrical utility companies separately generated their own power; then, the electricity grid allowed them to share capacity and infrastructure. Cloud computing is much the same. It allows computation to be shared over the Internet, and the advantage is a bargain basement for information data handling. Recently, pharma giant Eli Lilly used IBM’s cloud computing service to analyze data from a drug development clinical trial.
