Nano-Enabled DNA Sequencer

The goal of a faster, less expensive sequencing-capable of reading an entire genome for $1,000–comes closer every month. Physicist Stuart Lindsay, at Arizona State University, has shown how it’s possible to thread a stand of DNA through a carbon nanotube and use electrode-equipped scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes to take measurements as the thread passes through a 2.5 nanometer gap. Each DNA base emits a unique electrical signature. MORE
