BioLevitator Named Top Ten Technology for 2009
The Petri dish is soon to be a historical relic. A novel 3D cell culture system was named one of the ten most exciting tools to hit the life sciences for 2009 by The Scientist magazine. With over a million registered readers, The Scientist is a leading voice for the life science industry. “The benchtop size and microprocessor-controlled and -monitored environment, coupled with innovative use of magnetic fields to maintain cells in suspension, makes the BioLevitator an innovative product in a very traditional field,” stated Dr. Shawn Levy, one of the judges in this year’s panel. Global Cell Solutions (GCS) (Charlottesville, VA), the leading 3D cell culture company, introduced its “BioLevitator” last month, for tissue culturing cells in three dimensions-allowing faster, more natural growth. The BioLevitator is manufactured for GCS by the laboratory instrument maker Hamilton (Reno, NV). The device and a novel 3D cell growth biomimetic, on which the cells are grown, was invented by Robin A. Felder, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology at The University of Virginia.
