Ultrasound Histotripsy Tumor Ablation

Spatiotemporal local and abscopal cell death and immune responses to histotripsy focused ultrasound tumor ablation
“We [bioengineers at the University of Michigan] have observed that histotripsy, a non-thermal mode of mechanical FUS (focused ultrasound), incites potent local and abscopal anti-tumor immune responses that are stronger than those generated by thermal ablation or radiation. We reported that histotripsy induces the early release of immunogenically intact tumor antigens and pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) like high mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1) within the tumor ablation zone. Using flow cytometry, we demonstrated that these changes were followed by influx of innate and adaptive immune cell populations into treated tumors.” MORE
