Chemical engineers at MIT have developed a new material to stop hemorrhage from battlefield wounds or surgical accidents. “The biomaterial is a hydrogel — a material consisting largely of water — with a viscosity similar to toothpaste. Gelatin proteins and inorganic silica nanoparticles are incorporated into the material and function as a substrate that helps to accelerate coagulation rates and reduce clotting times.” MORE
