Bluetooth-Enabled Cardiac Defibrillator Implanted in First Patient

Last July the FDA approved Abbott’s “Gallant” implantable defibrillator which has Bluetooth connectivity for distance monitoring. St. Elizabeth’s Heart and Vascular Institute in Edgewood, KY has now implanted that device in a human patient. “The smartphone connectivity offers patients flexibility compared to traditional bedside monitors. The app allows easy transmission of data manually and access to device status such as battery longevity, all done in a cybersecure mode with enabled two-way authentication.” MORE
