New X-Ray Technology Shows Microfractures

CT images appear in gray scale, and consequently are insufficient for displaying microfractures in bones. However, researchers at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Baltimore have shown that a contrasting agent of hafnium (symbol Hf, with an atomic number of 72), is able to migrate to such microfractures and emit colors on CT scans (i.e. spectral CT).
