Electronic “Chip” Mimics Memory Process

Physicists at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) have used a 2D material, black phosphorus, in making a computer chip that takes its inspiration from optogenetics, where changes in light frequencies manipulate neurons. By changing light colors, the chip can mimic how the brain stores, deletes and processes information—in effect, a “bionic brain.” These scientists envision such a chip being useful for understanding such disorders as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
