In making a living hepatic device, MIT researchers were able to mimic a human liver’s microenvironment. They then modified the cells to resemble the conditions of a hereditary disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and an infection, malaria, while showing how an interfering RNA could screen therapeutic drugs.
