Materials scientists in Switzerland have engineered a new hydrogel that is highly adhesive to bones and can stretch and compress like natural cartilage. As they describe it: “[This] hydrogel is almost 90 percent water and includes of a web of cross-linked polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate together with cross-linked alginate, reinforced with nanofibrillated cellulose.” It is ten times more adhesive than other hydrogels developed for joint repair.
