“Targeting” Electrical Stimulation for Treating Paralysis

Here’s a noteworthy statement: “All patients involved in the study recovered voluntary control of leg muscles that had been paralyzed for many years.” This was the result of EPFL scientists using targeted electrical stimulation upon the lumbar spinal cord section which controls leg movements. Even when the stimulation was turned off, the patients were able to continue moving—walking (awkwardly, but independently) after five months of training. MORE WITH VIDEO
