Mimicking Stress on Retinal Cells

Age-related macular degeneration often results from new blood vessels growing in the choroidal layer of the eye. Supposing mechanical stress might be the cause, Utah State University researchers built two in vitro devices that supported retinal pigment epithelial tissue on flexible substrates. Then, by stretching the cells and substrate, they were able to demonstrate how this mechanical stress induced vascular endothelial growth factor to bring about disruptive angiogenesis. MORE
