Why Clinical Genetics Lags
December 18, 2018 | Terry Sharrer
It’s true in most fields that new research largely reinforces prior discoveries. That’s not necessarily bad in the very complicated genre of clinical genetics, but as this piece points out only about 10% of the 20,000 gene human genome is extensively investigated. This would be like Columbus spending most of his explorations in the Azores. 5,400 genes have not been reported at all (in publications). With such limited exploration, it’s surprising that clinical genetics has advanced even modestly in the past two generations. Columbus may have just arrived in the Bahamas, but whole new worlds are just over the horizon. MORE
