Engineers are getting closer to science fiction’s “tricorder.” This news from Glasgow University (UK) reports a hand-held multicorder that analyzes four metabolites (the essential nutrient choline, xanthine from purine degradation, the muscle tissue amino acid sarcosine, and cholesterol) from a tiny sample of blood serum or urine. The device is wired to an Android smartphone with software that records the four levels. Changes in these levels are associated with several diseases. MORE
