Solar Powered Pacemaker

Heart pacemaker batteries can last for a decade before they need to be surgically replaced. Even so, a battery that could be recharged without being replaced would be a step up for the user. To realize this, Swiss engineers at the University of Bern and Bern University Hospital have demonstrated how a small (3.6 square centimeters) solar device, implanted under the skin, can absorb enough near infrared light to power a pacemaker indefinitely.
