Apple’s Patent Application for a Wearable Blood Pressure Device

Two years ago, Apple engineers filed a patent application for a blood pressure monitoring monitor that has prompted speculation it will be incorporated into a newly designed Apple Watch. That may happen, but Apple might reflect on what happened to Cygnus’ GlucoWatch. Introduced in 2002, the Cygnus failed to understand barriers to adopting this new technology, such as a need to change models for diabetes management, and lack of insurance reimbursement. Apple surely will take these things into consideration, but the bigger obstacle was the GlucoWatch’s performance. It was not reliable for accurate measurement.
