Using A.I. for Routine Examinations

On a trip to China a few years ago, I saw a line of people at a children’s hospital extending out of a packed emergency room and down the street for some distance. No wonder Chinese medical authorities are leading the world in applying artificial intelligence to diagnosing illnesses, injuries, and idiopathic conditions. There are things in medicine that smart machines don’t do well—making judgements under stress and considering ethical issues—but the vast majority of medical interventions are rather simple affairs, where artificial intelligence could show the path to the future. And, China’s medical “labor” seems little concerned about automation taking away jobs. MORE
