Current art in diagnosing thyroid cancer relies, first, on an ultrasound scan, followed by fine needle biopsy if a nodule is detected. Researchers in Barcelona believe they have a better method: a laser and ultrasound co-analyzer which adds two spectroscopy tools to the ultrasound. This gives a probe of a nodule’s chemical profile, structure and hemodynamics—in telling whether the mass is malignant or benign. MORE
