Tissue Regeneration with Vascularization
April 24, 2018 | Terry Sharrer
This piece, based on research at the University of Queensland, doesn’t directly address the prospects for growing implantable kidneys from stem cells, but it could. At least two research groups have recently reported growing kidney organoids, while pointing out the need to do so with vascularization in order to grow up transplantable organs. This story may have a partial answer: placental stem cells that differentiate into mesenchymal and endothelial stem cells—i.e. “meso-endothelial stem cells.” This suggests the possibility of culturing organs with vascularization.
