Robotic Microsuturing

Swelling is a dangerous complication of breast cancer and reconstruction surgery. This can be ameliorated by reconnecting lymph and blood vessels, which can be as small as 0.3 millimeters in diameter. Surgeons at Maastricht University Medical Center in The Netherlands have employed a new microsurgical robot for this delicate procedure. The robot, named Microsure, “is controlled by a surgeon whose hand movements are converted into smaller, more precise movements which then are performed on the patient by a set of ‘robot hands’. The device also stabilizes any tremor in the surgeon’s movements, which makes the procedure more controlled and thus easier to perform.” MORE
