Get Diagnostic Tests at Your Grocery Store?

The rise and collapse of the gene testing company Theranos may have temporarily retarded the momentum of retail clinics, but they may be picking up steam now. Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp have created deals with grocery and pharmacy companies—Quest with Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, et al, and Lab Corp with Walgreens, and both together with Walmart—to offer in-store testing. The shopper simply has a blood or urine sample taken, and pushes on the frozen food isle or cosmetic counter. It is unclear whether such testing will require a physician’s order, but in any case it suggests healthcare is evolving toward a much more distributed delivery model. MORE
