Combination Virus and Human Antibodies to Deal with Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

Unlike a killer asteroid heading toward Earth, the toll of antibiotic resistant bacteria can be seen coming—or actually having come and gone before the discovery of penicillin. This piece describes a salvation strategy from Rockefeller University, where scientists have combined molecules from bacteriophage and human antibodies. The bacteriophage chemicals attack carbohydrate structures on germ surfaces, while the antibodies go after proteins. They call these hybrid molecules “Lysibodies.” MORE
